Some of you guys may have seen this on Instagram last week, but I realized I hadn’t actually written a proper recipe for the drink I’ve been obsessed with the past few months. About time!  If someone had told my younger self about the weird stuff she’d love to eat and drink in her thirties, she probably would have, like, spit Diet Coke in their faces. I really wanted to hate collagen, but I got curious about it when I was ghostwriting an article about a product and found myself getting cozy with PubMed to see what was in the literature. Was this stuff just hype? Was there something to it?

As an optimist who’s maybe a skeptic at heart, I was relieved to see that there was actually quite a bit there to support claims that collagen boosts hair, skin, and nail health. It’s also a good source of protein, so a great choice for when I have an early morning workout and need something in my stomach but am not ready for a full meal or if I need something to tide me over between meals when I have a long stretch until I can sit down and eat. I’ve tried a bunch of different brands (some were free samples, some I bought with my own money) to play around with and see what to use it for. I’ve tried it in coffee, in soup, with water, and in smoothies, but my favorite, by far, has been in hot cocoa form.

All winter, I’ve been loving this collagen hot cocoa. It’s the perfect thing on a cold day, and it’s so easy to make.  Enjoy it on its own but also pairs nicely with another one of my winter faves: blood oranges. I hope you love this!
